The Tree Line: In partnership with The Orchard Project and the Greater London Authority

A collaborative partnership between The Orchard Project and Street Trees for Living led to the concept design of an innovative tree-planting programme focusing on a ‘Tree Line’ framework; a green travel network linking schools to places of interest. By engaging school communities and local community groups, the Tree Line works with local people to design a network of connected green spaces via the strategic planting of school trees, street trees and orchards.

The programme design was a successful recipient of the Greater London Authority’s Green Roots Fund Round Two, laying the groundwork for delivery partners to bring 400 new trees to high-need areas in Lewisham and a neighbouring borough over the next two years, alongside a research framework for long-term sustainable school funding.

Grow Back Together: In partnership with Greentalk and the Greater London Authority

Partnering with Greentalk and Lewisham Council, Grow Back Together was a Street Trees for Living programme that breathed new life into Lewisham’s empty tree pits. 100 ‘vacant’ pits were planted with new trees in areas of the borough with low tree cover and high climate risk, adding up to 1300m2 of new tree canopy cover when mature.

This programme was funded by the Mayor of London’s Grow Back Greener fund and Lewisham Council, using innovative strategies to reach local residents, and developed technical solutions to get more people involved in caring for their local environment.

The School Programme: In partnership with The London Borough of Lewisham

The School Programme was developed with Lewisham Council and the charity Street Trees for Living, planting street and school trees with school communities, increasing canopy cover while encouraging the next generation to connect with nature and care for trees.

This programme worked with schools whose playgrounds held little to no greenery, and on or close to heavily polluted roads.

With support from the Greater London Authority the School Programme was then scaled, delivering a total of 800 school trees with 70 primary schools over seven London boroughs. The programme was designed to be entirely self-sustaining; as a result of this scalable framework, the initiative continues to run annually.

Project Brownhill: A Lewisham Blossoms programme in partnership with The National Trust

Project Brownhill was a joint project between The National Trust, Lewisham Council and Street Trees for Living, focusing planting close to a stretch of the south circular, London’s eighth most polluted road. It was a part of the wider ‘Lewisham Blossoms’ National Trust programme; a community tree planting scheme which saw the planting of hundreds of trees in densely populated areas.

Project Brownhill worked with local residents and one medical practice to plant 26 new street trees adjacent or parallel to Brownhill Road. These trees brought immediate colour and shade, encouraging wildlife and creating screening from traffic.
